Community-Led Ecosystem Restoration – TIP SESSIONS Skip to main content

Every three seconds, the world loses enough trees to cover a football field. Trees generate oxygen, habitat several species, help regulate temperatures and bring rainfall, fight floods and prevent soil erosion, cleanse the air, and are essential for our lives and livelihoods. Due to years of exploitation, these precious resources are in danger and it is our time to fight for them, and make an impact.

We can’t turn back time to reverse the damage. What we can do is plant and grow more trees, actively make our cities greener, rewild our gardens, and try to restore the balance. Ecosystem Restoration is the theme for World Environment Day, 2021. It will kick off a decade-long global mission by the United Nations to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.

Ecosystem restoration implies recovering degraded ecosystems, conserving ecosystems that are intact, and preventing further damage. We must shift from exploiting nature, to healing it. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance livelihoods while solving climate change and preventing the collapse of biodiversity.

There are many ways to take part in the restoration process, as an individual. We can reduce the pressure on the environment by disposing waste responsibly, adopting sustainable practices rooted in our culture, composting, and possibly planting more trees. This will help nature recover on its own, and adapt to the changing climate.

This year, TIP Sessions has organised for the distribution of 5000+ seedlings to households across the communities of Udupi, Mangalore, and Chikmagalur. The locals will be encouraged to plant these trees, and we plan to monitor their growth. Every year, the progress will be published on World Environment Day.

This is our endeavour to contribute to environmental restoration, while working with the community. By initiating this, we hope to empower the community to help restore the biodiversity of these regions, while generating more avenues for revenue, better soil fertility, and cleaner air. Impact can happen at any scale, and every little step counts towards our fight against ecological degradation and climate change.

This is our moment to come together and actively make a real impact. Let’s restore our peace with nature.
